That’s a wrap on the seventh Mission: Impossible movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Taking to Instagram, director Christopher McQuarrie shared an image from the set of what looks to be a camera recording a shot of a tape recorder on a desk. That is apparently the very last shot needed for the film, as McQuarrie notes in the caption that the project is now officially wrapped. He takes the time to thank those involved with the high-budget, lengthy production while using the hashtag #Part2Awaits to tease how interested he is to get started on the next one.
“To the greatest crew there ever was and ever will be,” McQuarrie writes in the Instagram post. “Those who weren’t there will never understand. Those who were will never forget. With sincerest thanks and unfathomable gratitude, not only to you but to your families and loved ones, safe travels and a richly deserved rest. That’s (officially) a wrap on Dead Reckoning Part I.”
Production was fairly tumultuous in the early days, given how Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One originally started filming in February. It was one of the first major productions to be shut down because of the pandemic, and that was just first of many delays that had affected the shoot. Adding to the complications of trying to make the movie during a pandemic was that it filmed in multiple locations, including Italy, Norway, the U.K., and the United Arab Emirates.
This past December, Cruise shared a video from the production of himself and McQuarrie in a small plane. He thanked fans for supporting him with Top Gun: Maverick, acknowledging that film’s tremendous success, before jumping from the aircraft. Just before his exit, Cruise said, “We’ll see you at the movies!”
Ethan Hunt Returns in Mission: Impossible 7
The film is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Along with Tom Cruise returning as Ethan Hunt, the movie stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Henry Czerny, Hannah Waddingham, and Esai Morales. Cruise and McQuarrie are producing the film.
Of the two-part story’s title, McQuarrie previously said on the Light the Fuse podcast, “Dead Reckoning didn’t really apply as well to Part One as well as it did to Part Two until we started to play with the beginning of the movie, and kind of recognize that Dead Reckoning, while it sounded cool, what did it really have to do with the movie? And over the course of our, really starting to dig down into the arc of the character journey for Ethan [Hunt], it took on deeper and deeper meanings as we went. And you’ll see just how thematic and how it represents, how it’s conceptually represented in every character’s journey in this film we’re in.”
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One had its first 20 minutes recently screened at CinemaCon. Until recently, the film was set to be released on July 14, 2023. It will now be released on July 12, 2023. Fans can then look forward to the next installment of the movie series (for now) when Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is released on June 28, 2024.
