Mo Salah’s no-nonsense Liverpool response to AFCON agony will delight Jurgen Klopp

Mohamed Salah has reportedly vowed to return to Liverpool training on Tuesday – just two days on from his Africa Cup of Nations heartbreak with Egypt. Salah was part of the side which was beaten on penalties by Senegal on Sunday night in Cameroon, but will report for duty at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre tomorrow.

The 29-year-old forward did not even get a chance to take a penalty in the shoot-out after his club-mate Sadio Mane buried the winning spot-kick for Senegal.

Salah, who had been due to take the fifth penalty for Egypt, was in floods of tears after Mane’s effort clinched it 4-2 after an attritional 0-0 draw at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.

He had been held back for the potential glory, but Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelmonem struck the post and Mohanad Lasheen saw his attempt saved by Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy to give Mane the chance to win it.

Mane, who had earlier seen a penalty saved by Egypt keeper Gabaski in the seventh minute, has travelled to Senegal to celebrate his country’s first ever AFCON title.

Jurgen Klopp will be delighted to have his star player back available, although the team have not suffered in his absence, winning five and drawing one of their six games without him.

Sunday’s 3-1 win over Cardiff City in the FA Cup saw new signing Luis Diaz play for the first time, while Liverpool were also boosted by the return of Harvey Elliott.

Salah was distraught after Senegal’s win was confirmed and was consoled by Liverpool team-mate Mane.

“I told him that he remains a very great player and it’s a pleasure to play for the same club,” Mane told beIN SPORTS.

“I have so much respect for him and he gave everything for his country.

“Unfortunately, he didn’t win, but that doesn’t mean it’s over for him.

“I also told him that he still has many things to win, including the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. They have a young team so maybe they will win it one day.”

Salah has never won AFCON with Egypt and has now twice finished as a runner-up at the competition following disappointment in 2017 when the Pharaohs were beaten 2-1 by Cameroon.
