Mokwena confirms he will coach Mamelodi Sundowns next season

In the wake of speculation that he was being courted by North African and Middle East sides, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena says he will coach the club in the next season.

Mokwena was handed the coaching reins as a senior coach at Sundowns and managed to guide the Tshwane giants to DStv Premiership glory – he confirmed his stay with the league champions.

At the same time, Mokwena was instrumental for the club as Sundowns reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League and the final of the MTN8 this season.

Speaking after walking away with the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season Award on Sunday, Mokwena said he is going nowhere following interest from top North African clubs.

The 36-year-old tactician, Mokwena also made history to win the title for Sundowns with seven matches left to end the campaign.

Mokwena also recorded an unbeaten run of 24 matches in all competitions as a coach and received praise from football pundits and Masandawana fans.

“The club will make an announcement soon, I can tell you that I will be here next season,” said Mokwena said per FARPost.

“I love this club (Sundowns), I’m falling in love with it every single day. I feel loved, I get incredible support from the football club, I get incredible support from the chairman, the Motsepe family, and the board.

“There is a very good relationship, what more can a coach ask for.”

SUNDOWNS’ MOKWENA SPEAKS ABOUT OFFERS

The former Orlando Pirates coach, Mokwena, also touched on offers for him from North Africa and Middle East teams who tried to lure him away from Sundowns.

The Brazilians’ boss said he wasn’t impressed and tempted at all by the much-publicised offers. The South African reported that the Soweto-born mentor was courted by Al Ahly and Wydad Casablanca as they were impressed with his tactical prowess.

“I don’t think my agent will lie to me,” he added.
