The cast of Monk are getting back together for a new reunion movie in development at Peacock. On Wednesday, the project was officially announced, with Variety reporting that Tony Shalhoub will join other returning stars for the reunion film. The movie has been dubbed Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, suggesting this will be a one-off that brings the characters back together for one last case as a special treat for fans who still love the original TV series.
In Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, Shalhoub returns as detective Adrian Monk as he investigates a “very personal case involving his beloved step-daughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.” Joining Shalhoub’s Monk from the TV show to reprise their roles are Ted Levine as Leland Stottlemeyer, Traylor Howard as Natalie Teeger, Jason Gray-Stanford as Randy Disher, Melora Hardin as Trudy Monk, and Hector Elizondo as Dr. Neven Bell.
Andy Breckman, who created the TV series, wrote the reunion film for Peacock, while Monk director Randy Disk will also be helming Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Breckman and Disk are executive producing alongside Shalhoub and David Hoberman, who served as an exec producer on the TV show.
“New and returning fans of Monk will love how this creative team was able to preserve all that we admire about Adrian Monk while bringing him into the present,” says UCP’s Beatrice Springborn in a statement. “We can’t wait for Peacock viewers to experience this fresh, fun and imaginative film.”
NBCUniversal’s Michael Sluchan added, “When creator Andy Breckman came to us with a new Monk case set in present day, we immediately fell in love with this story all over again. The movie has the heart and humor of the original series with a contemporary relevance, and we’re overjoyed to work with the original creative team, including Andy, David Hoberman, Randy Zisk, the unparalleled Tony Shalhoub, and our partners at UCP, for what is sure to be a must-see movie event for Peacock audiences.”
Monk Will Return for One More Case
Monk originally ran on USA Network for eight seasons between 2002 and 2009. During its run, the show managed to claim eight Emmy Awards along with many other accolades. Because of its popularity, it has spawned a Turkish adaptation as well as an online prequel series dubbed Little Monk. There were reports of a TV movie happening back in 2012, though that iteration of the project wound up getting scrapped before production could begin.
In 2020, the cast of Monk reunited for a short that served as a part of Peacock’s At-Home Variety Show, created because of the pandemic. The short featured Tony Shalhoub as Monk alongside Ted Levine, Jason Gray-Stanford, and Traylor Howard. The short was dubbed “Monk in Quarantine,” and you can watch it below.
