MARINA — A Marina High School student was arrested Tuesday after threatening violence against fellow Marina High students, according to police.
At around 10:30 p.m. Monday night, Marina police officers received reports of a “credible threat of violence against multiple students at Marina High School,” according to a Marina Police Department press release. After an investigation, which Marina Police Chief Tina Nieto said continued overnight into Tuesday morning, officers identified the student who made these threats.
Police located the student at his home in Marina at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. He was then brought into custody and booked at the Monterey County Juvenile Hall.
Following the student’s arrest, additional Marina officers conducted “an extensive follow-up investigation at Marina High,” police said.
Nieto assured that through the investigation, police were in consultation with school officials from both Marina High and Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. She said school officials cooperated with police and waited to hold the release of information until the suspected student was brought into custody.
“In the city of Marina, safety is our No. 1 concern,” Nieto said in a voicemail Wednesday afternoon. “We take these things very seriously. After seeing what happened in … the Texas shooting (at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde), it reminds us that for public safety, any threats against our students, … against our schools are taken very, very seriously in the city of Marina.”
The investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Marina Police Department at 831-884-1290. During non-business hours and weekends, calls should be directed to 831-384-7575. Crime tips can be submitted online at www.cityofmarina.org. Anonymous tips can be left at 831-821-1286.
