More affordable hybrid joins 2023 GWM Haval Jolion range

The cost of entry into a new GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid has just been lowered, with the brand announcing a new Lux variant of its electrified SUV.

Priced at $36,990 drive-away, it undercuts the Jolion Ultra Hybrid by $3000. Order books are open and first shipments are beginning to arrive, and GWM says it’ll be available in showrooms in “the coming weeks”.

Externally, it’s indistinguishable from the Ultra Hybrid apart from the lack of a panoramic sunroof.

It shares the pricier hybrid model’s front fascia, including the special hybrid-only grille and blue headlight trim, and also uses the same 18-inch alloy wheels.

That’s despite the non-hybrid Jolion Lux riding on smaller 17s than the Ultra.

Otherwise, the Jolion Lux Hybrid shares the same list of features as its petrol counterpart.

That means it foregoes the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone charger, head-up display and panoramic sunroof.

Colour choices are the same as the Ultra Hybrid, and comprise:

  • Hamilton White
  • Smoke Grey
  • Golden Black
  • Glacier Blue
  • Azure Blue
  • Mars Red

Naturally, the Lux Hybrid features the same powertrain as the Ultra Hybrid, consisting of a 1.5-litre petrol engine, mated with what Haval dubs a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) that comprises the electric motor and gearbox.

Peak combined power is 139kW, and peak combined torque is 375Nm.

It’s front-wheel drive, and uses a claimed 5.0 litres per 100km on the combined cycle. The Toyota RAV4 2WD Hybrid uses 4.7L/100km on the combined cycle, while the Kia Niro Hybrid uses a claimed 4.0L/100km.

GWM has been busily expanding the Haval Jolion range.

The Ultra Hybrid arrived late last year, and was followed by the sportier S which features a more powerful version of the standard car’s turbocharged 1.5-litre engine plus a multi-link rear suspension.
