The i Vision Circular from BMW may not be among the automaker’s highest profile concept cars of the past two years, but it has big implications for where the industry is headed in sustainable technologies. The small car — envisioned for around 2040 — was created entirely with recycled materials and bio-based raw materials. The body is recycled aluminum that uses no paint. No chrome is used. The tires are made of cultivated natural rubber that’s sustainable. Material bonding throughout the car is achieved through new joining techniques that allow efficient dismantling at a later stage. BMW is already pressing its supply chain to lift its recycled and reused materials content level, which currently stands at 30 percent of content.
