Mother/Android: Netflix’s new thriller reduced us to tears, and viewers can’t stop talking about it

Chloe plays young pregnant woman Georgia, who we find out had mixed feelings about her pregnancy when she found out about it – she’s unsure about her relationship with her partner Sam (played by Euphoria star Algee), and she’s not sure she’s ready to be a mother.

In a future world where android robots are used as servants to help in the home, Chloe and Sam find themselves having to flee when a rebellion sees thousands of the high-tech creatures turn against their owners.

The movie sees the young couple fight against the odds to try and escape their fate and save their child, and presents some pretty close-to-home issues in doing so – particularly that of families fleeing current conflicts.

One viewer tweeted: “When refugees escape war and conflict at home and put their children on a boat, a raft, or under a lorry. Seen Mother/Android on Netflix yet?”

In fact, the Mother/Android’s director Mattson Tomlin was inspired by his own story in creating the film.

“I realised that I had this personal story that was a love letter to my biological parents, but I didn’t wanna just do that straight. I wanted to do it with some kind of genre component,” he told Collider. “I was born in the aftermath of the Romanian revolution, and I thought I would change that to the robot revolution.”

The film’s star Chloe Grace Moretz also told the publication: “This is a story based on his [Mattson’s] own true life and what he found out about his parents’ story. That personal touch to it is one that sci-fi films don’t often have. But when you can put that into a genre film, I find that those are the best types of genre films, when have that gravity to them. You can have all of this frivolity, in a lot of ways, and expansion, but at the heart of it, you have a real story.”
