Mother dies after eating ‘poisoned chocolates’ she received on her 54th birthday

  • Woman died in Brazil after eating chocolates left for her on ‘suspicious’ call
  • Police have opened an investigation into the unusual circumstances of her death

A woman has died after eating ‘poisoned chocolates’ she received as a gift for her 54th birthday.

Lindaci Viegas Batista de Carvalho collapsed in agony after trying the sweets as she left a beauty parlour in Brazil on Saturday.

Her family said she had received a number of threatening calls and messages before answering a ‘suspicious’ call from a courier with a package on May 20.

At first she refused to eat the chocolates, but after her ex-husband joked they were a gift from him, she tried them and soon fell ill. Her sister, Lenice Batista, said her eyes rolled back and arms contracted.

Carvalho was taken to hospital in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, where she was declared dead on arrival. Her family believe that she was poisoned and police have opened an investigation into her death.

Her family said that she had told them she feared the chocolates ‘could be poisoned’ after receiving a series of threats on social media from a specific person, who has not been named.

‘It was all very macabre, very premeditated,’ her sister said.

Suspicious of the courier’s call, Carvalho asked for the package to be left for her to collect from her current boyfriend’s shop in the north of the city.

Batista added that Carvalho’s son had tried the chocolates but spat them out, saying they tasted bad.

But Carvalho started eating the chocs after her former husband said they were a gift from him, according to local media.

He has since claimed he was joking and has no idea who sent them.

According to her sister, the two have a good relationship and she does not consider him to be suspicious.

The ongoing investigation will analyse the chocolate for traces of any substances that could have led to her death. Results are expected within a month.

Police are also investigating a former partner of Carvalho’s current partner.

Batista told O Globo: ‘We suspect that an ex of her current partner is the main suspect.

‘We have evidence of her making threats, a picture of her holding a weapon with a threatening message for my sister.’

The delivery driver also pleaded his innocence, saying: ‘When the boy came to talk to me, everything was normal, he wasn’t nervous.

‘I made an innocent delivery, and I am innocent. I have a clear conscience. When I woke up, I saw the report of a lady who died with a bonbon and I thought “I made this delivery”‘.

Carvalho was buried on May 22 at the Catumbi cemetery.

No arrests have yet been made.
