The incident occurred at a narrow section of the race where both lanes were occupied by participants and accompanying vehicles.
Tragically, the collision was witnessed by viewers as the race was being broadcasted live, prompting Germany’s ARD broadcaster to interrupt the transmission.
Police officials confirmed that the rider, who had a camera operator with him, collided head-on with the cyclist. Regrettably, the rider passed away at the scene, while both the camera operator and the cyclist were rushed to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Following the unfortunate incident, the race was momentarily halted out of respect but later resumed after a short period.
The 70-year-old rider died on the spot, police said. The triathlete, aged 26, suffered severe injuries while the camera operator was in shock and was also taken to hospital for treatment.
“A closure of the race track was unavoidable in the area of ??the accident,” Hamburg police said in a statement.
“The athletes had to get off in front of the accident site and cross over to the dyke. Towards the direction of the city centre, the racetrack was briefly diverted.”
