Motorola’s Android-Friendly Answer To Apple Emergency SOS Is Now Available – SlashGear

While Motorola’s Satellite Link takes inspiration from Apple’s Emergency SOS service, it does have a few aces up its sleeve. Unlike Apple’s service, which only supports sending an uneditable text message with emergency information to emergency services, the Satellite Link is a true communication device that allows users to send full-fledged text messages to anyone.

There is one caveat, though.

These text messages will only be delivered to users who have installed a special Satellite Messenger app. If users attempt to send a text message to a smartphone that doesn’t have this app installed, they will receive a message asking them to download the app first. While this may be a slight inconvenience, there is no denying that simply getting the ability to communicate with people even when you’re off the grid is a virtual godsend. As of today, the satellite coverage for this service is limited to the entire continental United States, Canada, and almost the entirety of Europe. The service will expand to Central and Southern America by the end of 2024. The company expects coverage to extend to large parts of Asia by mid-2023.

As for the device itself, it is a rigged product made to MIL-SPEC 810H standards. Besides being IP68 certified, it’s also vibration and drop tested. It only weighs 70g and features a 600mAh battery that can last up to 4 days. The device also supports check-in and trigger SOS features even if it is not connected to a smartphone.
