The senior wicketkeeper-batter – who had been struggling with his knee injury in the ongoing marquee competition – didn’t disappoint CSK fans by playing an explosive cameo and took his team to a respectable total.
Dhoni walked into the middle at number seven after the top six batters were back in the dugout. CSK were 126-6 in 16.2 overs and the captain had to provide a late impetus to help his team post a decent total on the board.
The right-handed batter from Ranchi first saw through over number 17 bowled by Khaleel Ahmed as he was the last recognised batter for CSK as a set Ambati Rayudu was already dismissed in that over. Highest Runs Scored in Death Overs in IPL: CSK captain MS Dhoni completes 2600 runs
However, when Khaleel was brought back by Delhi Capitals captain David Warner, Dhoni decided to attack. The seasoned campaigner smashed a couple of sixes and a boundary to milk 21 runs from the 19th over.
In the final over bowled by in-form Mitchell Marsh, Dhoni only got to face just a solitary delivery and was caught at long-on by the opposite number, Warner. His knock, thus, came to an end for 20 off 9 balls and finished with a strike rate of 222.22.
It was the cameo from their skipper which helped CSK post a decent total on the board and ensured their bowlers had something to fight for. His knock was laced with some vintage Dhoni shots and the fans at Chepauk couldn’t have asked for more.
