Multan Sultans injury update, key players in PSL 2023
Right-arm pacer Shahnawaz Dahani is back in the Multan Sultans squad after coincidentally getting injured in their opening match of the season against Qalandars.
Mohammad Rizwan six runs away from winning Green Cap
Rizwan will like to ensure he bags the Green Cap (Most runs in PSL 2023) for the season as he is at 516 runs in 11 innings. His opening partner for the game is all set to be Usman Khan, whose record-fastest century in the side’s last league match forced Sultans to include him in place of Shan Masood, who scored two half-centuries in the last five innings and has scored 236 runs in the nine innings.
Kieron Pollard and Tim David in hot form
Rilee Rossouw is expected to bat at No. 3 with his entertaining 121 during league stages still fresh in everyone’s minds. However, the South African has scored 13 and 15 in his last two games.
West Indies’ explosive batter Kieron Pollard meanwhile was star in the last game with a 34-ball 57 after Rizwan fell at a crucial point in the game. Tim David did his finishing job well too with a knock of 15-ball 22 after scoring 43* and 60 in the innings before.
All-rounders Khushdil Shah, Anwar Ali and Usama Mir provide further firepower down the order.
With the ball, pacer Anwar and leg-spinner Usama did a fine job as well by picking 1/13 (3 overs) and 2/12 (2 overs respectively). The duo took 23 wickets together this PSl with the Mir taking 14 of them. Khushdil Shah hasn’t been entrusted with much bowling this season.
Pace all-rounder Anwar proved a bit costly in the last two games despite picking two wickets and came after bowling 3/33 against Islamabad United.
Multan spin bowling is weaker than Qalandars
Leg-spinner Mir, who saw a dip in the form off late, picked three wickets in the last three games and has 12 wickets to her name this PSL season. Shah, on the other hand, is yet to get enough overs from the captain as the Multan spin bowling lacked the firepower in comparison to Qalandars.
Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah have 44 wickets among them
Dahani is unlikely to play the final with young pacers Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah leading the wicket-taking chart with 23 and 21 wickets respectively and has been pivotal to Multan Sultans’ successful run this season.
Pacer Sheldon Cottrell, on the other hand, was assertive on his return to the playing 11 as he picked a 3/20 to dismantle Qalandars’ batting order.
Lahore Qalandars injury news, key players
Lahore Qalandars have no injury concerns despite plyaing three matches in four days but form of their star opener is a concern
Fakhar Zaman’s bat went silent in play-offs
Fakhar Zaman shot a brilliant 115 late in the league stages but since then has scored 25 runs in three innings. The southpaw batter, however, has scored 390 runs this PSL at an average of 32.75 while slamming the most sixes (26) in the tournament.
His opening partner Mirza Tahir Baig was given another opportunity after a string of poor shows but the batter made the most out of it with a half-century. Abdullah Shafique, who was sent back to No. 3, has scored just 20 runs in last five innings, 10 of which came in the last game before he was ran out.
Ahsan Bhatti was handed a rare chance in the playing 11 too and the youngster scored just 15 runs.
Sam Billings and Sikandar Raza warmed up for the final
It was the impactful innings from overseas duo Sam Billings and Sikandar Raza, who played the knocks of 28 and 23 respectively to help Qalandars in the chase and warmed up for the final.
David Wiese and Shaheen Afridi showed their batting prowess with cameos as well. However, it was there bowling that didn’t really inspire much during the game. The Qalandars captain scored 12 before going for 41 runs in four overs and then took a wicket only of the last ball in the spell.
Haris Raul was off the pace too with 0/31 spell but has been in a much-better wicket-taking form than his captain.
Zaman Khan looks lethal on Lahore’s surface
While the three senior pacers failed to inspire much, Zaman Khan’s sling-shot bowling action surprised batters with next to no bounce off the pitch and could worry Multan Sutlans’ top-order.
Among other bowlers in the team, Haris Rauf has been in good form in the closing stages of the competition as 13 of his 17 wickets came in the last six games, including 3/34 in the last game as his pace variations have caught the batters off guard.
Their understudy, Zaman Khan has made a good case for himself with 13 wickets, seven of which came in the last four games.
Rashid Khan in Maroon cap race with 18 wickets
Rashid Khan leads the spin attack alone with 18 wickets in 10 games and had match-defining spells as well, leading the improvement of Qalandars post his arrival.
