Mum tried to drown baby at home: police

The mother of a 10-month-old baby has been charged with the attempted murder of her child, with police alleging she tried to drown the boy at home days before he died in hospital.

NSW Police allege the woman tried to drown the child at a home in Westleigh on March 19 after paramedics called to the address at about 7pm in response to reports of a child in distress.

The child was then taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and admitted for treatment.

Around 12.30pm on March 21, emergency services were called to a home in northern Sydney, responding to calls of the same child who was found unresponsive.

The baby was again treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance and taken to The Children’s Hospital in Westmead.

Around 2pm on March 23, the boy died in hospital – the same day his mother faced court for the first time.

Ku-Ring-Gai Police Area Command commenced inquiries and declared the address a crime scene, before detectives from the Child Abuse Squad spoke with the mother in hospital.

The woman was arrested and taken to the Hornsby Police Station and charged with two counts of attempted murder.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said the woman’s charges will be upgraded to one count of murder and one count of attempted murder at her next court appearance.

“Police will allege in court that the woman attempted to drown the boy at a home in Westleigh on Sunday 19 March 2023,” NSW Police told NCA NewsWire in a statement.

“It will be further alleged the woman restricted the boy’s breathing at the Berowra Heights home on Tuesday 21 March 2023.”

She will return to court in May.
