This includes brands like Estrid, which has partnered with diversity champions and GLAMOUR girlies including Munroe Bergdorf and Florence Given, to announce its new brand ethos ‘For Human Beauty’ – the brand’s mission to celebrate inclusive beauty, irrespective of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other label insisted on by society.
The inspirational team of ambassadors are known for their individuality and for speaking out against the status quo, rebelling against what is defined as ‘normal’ by society. Alongside Munroe and Florence, you’ll see non-binary and trans visibility activist Gialu Mx and queer, body positivity influencer Enam Asiama, amongst others.
The empowering campaign comes as research, commissioned by Estrid, revealed that almost two-thirds of the UK do not feel represented by the beauty industry – and almost half have avoided buying certain products because they felt excluded, which is pretty shocking.
Heavily impacted by this are genderfluid (80%) and non-binary people (70%), who made up the largest proportions of those missing out on purchases due to lack of representation. Almost half (48%) of those identifying as transgender said they feel isolated by being unable to find the right beauty and grooming products for them, reporting feelings of segregation (37%) and victimisation (25%) as a result.
Over a third (34%) of Black and mixed-race people surveyed said they do not feel represented by the beauty and grooming industry, and a fifth (20%) were unsurprised by being unable to find the right products for them, highlighting wider issues with representation faced within the beauty industry. Something needs to change.
Speaking about her role in the campaign, Munroe Bergdorf, who was one of GLAMOUR’s Women of the Year, said: “What’s so beautiful about human interaction is that we all unlock different parts of ourselves for different people. It’s dependent upon the stage of life you’re currently experiencing, as well as the stage they’re experiencing. Every relationship with another person is so unique and beautiful in its own way. When I think about my own relationships, it’s clear that love manifests in different ways depending on the individual. For example, sometimes I’m motherly, or sometimes I’m sisterly, it just varies depending on our mutual connection. No matter who I’m interacting with, I’m offering them a piece of myself and my inner beauty, which in turn makes me feel more beautiful overall.”
And when asked what beauty means to her, Florence Given said it’s all about ‘glowing from the inside out’. “I feel my most beautiful after giving good, authentic advice when I’m helping those around me and making them feel good about themselves. It’s not about being, or looking, perfect. Life can be messy and we make mistakes because we’re human, and that’s what I’ve tried to achieve through my writing and art, and prove that it is these imperfections that make us all beautiful,” she said.
In an era of toxic beauty standards across social media, this campaign is certainly a refreshing one.
