Shantaram
Where to watch: Apple TV+
Let’s start this week off with a tale of redemption!
Shantaram is a new series based on a novel from 20 years ago. It stars Charlie Hunnam (from Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim) as an Australian prisoner who breaks out one day and flees to Bombay (which was renamed Mumbai in 1995) back in the early 1980s. He’s trying to find a fresh start, and finds it by helping out a small community to survive. But no matter how hard he tries, he can’t shake his criminal tendencies as the local bosses want him to start working for them. Complicating matters even further is the fact that there’s an Australian cop (played by Richard Roxburgh from Moulin Rouge! and Elvis) who fancies himself an Inspector Javert, chasing down Hunnam’s Jean Valjean. This show also stars Radhika Apte (from OK Computer), and Alexander Siddig (from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine).

Stars at Noon
Where to watch: Cinemas
Next up, it’s time for an intense romantic drama!
Stars at Noon is the latest film from acclaimed French filmmaker Claire Denis. She premiered the film at Cannes, where it was picked up by A24. This film takes places in Nicaragua, and it’s about an American journalist (played by Margaret Qualley from the Leftovers and Maid) who was sent to the nation as a special correspondent. One night, she meets a British man (played by Joe Alwyn from Catherine Called Birdy and the Favourite), and the two begin a torrid affair. As the two connect, a revolution seems to be coming, and many military officials and Americans are interested in this British man for reasons the journalist can’t figure out. As the stakes get higher, will their connection grow more intense? This film also stars Benny Safdie (from Good Time), Danny Ramirez (from Top Gun: Maverick), and John C. Reily (from Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story).

Rosaline
Where to watch: Disney+
Now, let’s take a look at a revisionist rom-com!
Rosaline is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in the same vibe as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. It stars Kaitlyn Dever (from Booksmart and Dopesick) as Rosaline, who in case you don’t remember is Romeo’s (played by Kyle Allen from West Side Story) ex-girlfriend before he meets Juliet (played by Isabela Merced from Dora and the Lost City of Gold). Rosaline decides she wants him back, and is willing to do whatever it takes. As she becomes friendly with Juliet, she sees the doomed lovebirds going down the same path they do in in the original play, and maybe true love won’t be found between Rosaline and Romeo. This film also stars Bradley Whitford (from Cabin in the Woods), Minnie Driver (from Good Will Hunting), and Christopher McDonald (from Happy Gilmore).

The Curse of Bridge Hollow
Where to watch: Netflix
Now’s it time for a spooktacular film!
The Curse of Bridge Hollow stars Priah Ferguson (from Stranger Things) and Marlon Wayons (from Requiem for a Dream) as a father and daughter who move to a new town. He’s a science teacher and isn’t interested in superstitions or holidays, so Halloween is his least favourite time of year. And unfortunately everyone in this new town loves Halloween. One night, his daughter discovers an ancient ghost hiding in their house and accidentally frees him. He possesses all the Halloween decorations in the town, and prepares to take over to make every day Halloween. Father and daughter will have to team up to prevent this spirit from ruining Halloween and the rest of the year! This also stars Lauren Lapkus (from Crashing), Rob Riggle (from 21 Jump Street), and John Michael Higgins (from Best in Show).

Halloween Ends
Where to watch: Cinemas
Last but not least, one of cinema’s most famous killers returns once more!
Halloween Ends is the last film in the series’ newest trilogy, which includes 2018’s Halloween and 2021’s Halloween Kills. In this film, it’s been several years since Michael Myers’ night of terror, and Laurie (played by Jaime Lee Curtis from Everything Everywhere All at Once and True Lies) is now living with her granddaughter Allyson (played by Andi Matichak from Son). She’s writing a memoir about her life, and the two nights of terror she experienced at the hands of Myers. But when a young boy is killed, and a babysitter is blamed for it, Laurie realizes that Haddonfield’s nightmare might be back. This film also stars Will Patton (from Minari), Kyle Richards (from Down to Earth) and both James Jude Courtney and Nick Castle as Michael Myers (fun fact, Castle was the first person ever to play this famous serial killer in 1978).
