MUST-WATCH: Back to the Matrix!

0

We’re going back into the Matrix for this week’s edition of the MUST-WATCH! But will it take that coveted top spot against stiff competition like a Lucille Ball biopic and the latest film from one of America’s greatest contemporary directors? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Being the Ricardos

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

Starting this week off with a trip back in time!

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz enjoy some downtime in Being the Ricardos.

Being the Ricardos is a film about Lucille Ball (played here by Nicole Kidman from Eyes Wide Shut and Big Little Lies) and her husband, Desi Arnaz (played by Javier Bardem from Skyfall and Dune: Part One). This film, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin (who wrote the Social Network and directed the Trial of the Chicago 7), sees Lucy and Desi at a time in their lives when she is accused of being a communist. The film offers a behind the scene look at the personal lives of the two first famous television stars, as well as the potential breakdown of their marriage.

The Matrix Resurrections

Where to watch: Cinemas

Next up, it’s time to go back to everyone’s favourite trans allegory-blockbuster!

The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth live-action film in the franchise. Returning in this film are Neo (played by Keanu Reeves from John Wick and My Own Private Idaho) and Trinity (played by Carrie-Anne Moss from Jessica Jones and Memento). Despite dying at the end of the last film, both are alive again and living in the Matrix. They don’t recall their experience fighting in the war, but every time they pass by each other they seem to remember something. This all changes when Neo is once again pulled out of the Matrix, and his fight resumes. This is directed by Lana Wachowski (who directed the previous trilogy with her sister Lilly), and it also stars several new cast members like Johnathan Groff (from Mindhunter), Jessica Henwick (from Iron Fist) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (from Aquaman).

You can watch this film in cinemas now!

Don’t Look Up

Where to watch: Netflix

Now, it’s time for a critique of the times we live in.

Don’t Look Up is the latest satire from Adam McKay (the director of Anchorman and the Big Short). This film stars Jennifer Lawrence (from Silver Linings Playbook and the Hunger Games) and Leonardo DiCaprio (from Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and Titanic) as two scientists who discover that a comet is coming to Earth, and it will destroy the entire planet. They go on a media tour to inform the public, but most of them don’t believe that a comet is actually coming. It might feel like a film about the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s more about climate change. How it’s a serious threat that could mean the death of everyone on our planet, and the general apathy towards it from most of our population. It also stars Meryl Streep (from Sophie’s Choice), Jonah Hill (from the Wolf of Wall Street), and Cate Blanchett (from Nightmare Alley).

You can watch this film on Netflix now!

Encanto

Where to watch: Disney+

Now it’s time for some family fun!

Encanto is a Disney animated film starring Stephanie Beatriz (from Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the Light of the Moon). She plays Mirabel, a child of this family that lives in a magical home called Casita, powered by a living candle. Her entire extended family has abilities ranging from talking to animals to superhuman strength, all of which have been provided by the house. But Mirabel doesn’t have any powers, and she’s treated differently for it. She realizes that the house is falling apart, and she decides she will do whatever she can to keep it, and her family, together. This film also stars John Leguiziamo (from Romeo + Juliet), Diane Guererro (from Orange is the New Black) and features music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (the creator of Hamilton).

Licorice Pizza

Where to watch: Cinemas

Lastly, a new film from one of America’s greatest directors is out now!

Licorice Pizza
Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman enjoy the heat in Licorice Pizza.

Licorice Pizza is the latest film from Paul Thomas Anderson (the director of There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, and the Master). It stars two first-time actors, Cooper Hoffman (the son of PTA’s frequent collaborator Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Alana Haim (of the band Haim). They play a 15 year old and 25 year old respectively who becomes friends, while living in the San Fernando Valley of the 1970s. They encounter many stars and famous people of the time, people played by Bradley Cooper (from American Hustle), Sean Penn (from I Am Sam) and Benny Safdie (from Good Time).
