MUST-WATCH: Marvel ventures into the spy genre

We won’t be getting a new Marvel movie until the fall, but their latest series has entered the MUST-WATCH! Could the latest genre experiment take over the MUST-WATCH Top 10, or could it go to a surreal comedy about being a little too tall? Perhaps a movie about accepting a very strange job? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

The Perfect Find

Let’s start off this week with a little romance!

The Perfect Find stars Gabrielle Union (from Being Mary Jane and Top Five) as a beauty journalist in desperate need of a job. She calls up an old frenemy (played by Gina Torres from Firefly) who hires her. Shortly after that, she meets a young man (played by Keith Powers from the New Edition Story) and hooks up with him at a party. She’s excited to pursue these two new interests, but they both collide when she discovers her new beau is her coworker AND the son of her new boss. This film also stars La La Anthony (from Think Like a Man), Aisha Hinds (from 9-1-1), and D.B. Woodside (from 24).

I’m a Virgo stars Jharrel Jerome (from Moonlight and When They See Us) as a 19 year old black guy who is also 13 feet tall. He’s spent his whole life living with his aunt and uncle, and he’s getting sick of being cooped up in their tiny apartment. He branches out into the world looking for adventure, and as we all know virgos love adventure. This show also stars Carmen Ejogo (from It Comes at Night), Mike Epps (from the Hangover) and Walton Goggins (from the Hateful Eight).

Secret Invasion

Now, it’s time for one of Marvel’s darkest ideas!

Secret Invasion is a new show that finally puts one of Marvel’s biggest recurring characters in the spotlight, Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson from Pulp Fiction and Glass). Returning to Earth after a few years in space, he reunites with the alien Skrull Talos (played by Ben Mendelsohn from Bloodline and Star Wars: Rogue One). Talos warns him there’s a renegade group of Skrulls who plan on finally taking over Earth and claiming it for their own. Fury and Talos will have travel the world, utilizing all their spy contacts, and try to figure who is friend and who is foe. This series also stars Olivia Colman (from the Favourite), Emilia Clarke (from Game of Thrones), and Kingsley Ben-Adir (from One Night in Miami…).

Skull Island

Next up, let’s head back to the Monsterverse!

Skull Island is a new show set in the same universe as the new Godzilla and King Kong movies. This show is about a group of explorers setting out to rescue a missing woman called Annie (played by Mae Whitman from the DUFF), but they end up getting lost themselves. They wind up on Skull Island, where King Kong and many other monsters live. They’ll have to what they can to survive, but it looks like Annie has done all right for herself on this island. This show also stars Darren Barnet (from Never Have I Ever), Benjamin Bratt (from Coco), and Betty Gilpin (from GLOW).

No Hard Feelings

Lastly, it’s time for a raunchy summer comedy!

No Hard Feelings stars Jennifer Lawrence (from the Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook) as a 32 year old Uber driver who loses her car. Desperate to avoid selling her house to stay afloat, she accepts a strange job on Craigslist. The job involves her seducing a 19 year old recluse (played by Andrew Barth Feldman from A Tourist’s Guide to Love), and helping him come out of his shell before he attends Princeton University. But no matter how many times she undresses or spells it out for him, he can’t quite seem to take the hint. This film also stars Matthew Broderick (from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Ebon Moss-Bacharach (from the Bear), and Laura Benanti (from Supergirl).
