Reboot
Where to watch: Disney+
We’re starting this week off with a meta sitcom about sitcoms!
Reboot is a new show starring Rachel Bloom (the creator and star of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) as a t.v. writer who pitches a reboot of a beloved sitcom called Step Right Up. It was a very popular early 2000s sitcom, and the cast now have all gone in crazier directions. One of the stars (played by Johnny Knoxville) has drug issues, another one (played by Judy Greer from Jawbreaker) is stuck doing low budget sci-fi, and the other main star (played by Keegan-Michael Key from Key & Peele) is unsuccessfully trying to become a film star. All three need a career boost, but it’s unclear if they can mesh 20 years later. Will those three be able to put aside their egos and work together again, or is this reboot doomed? This show also stars Paul Reiser (from Stranger Things), Krista Marie Yu (from Dr. Ken), and Calum Worthy (from American Vandal).
You can watch the first few episodes on Disney+ with others coming out weekly!
Lou
Where to watch: Netflix
Now it’s time for a little action!
Lou is a new thriller starring Allison Janney (from I, Tonya and the West Wing) as a woman living alone in the wild. She has a dog, but that’s the only other life she interacts with. She lives a quiet existence, until one day a nearby neighbour (played by Jurnee Smollett from Birds of Prey) frantically runs to her door saying her daughter has been kidnapped. The two decide to head out into the woods and search for her, hoping to save her life before the kidnappers can do anything horrible to her. But as it turns out, Janney’s character has a dark history that somehow connects to this mystery. This film also stars Logan Marshall Green (from Upgrade).

Andor
Where to watch: Disney+
Next up, let’s take a trip to a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away!
Andor is a new prequel series based on the character of Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna from the Terminal and Narcos: Mexico), the dashing rebel from Rogue One. This film focuses on the beginning of his involvement with the rebellion, with his character originally much more hopeful than he was portrayed in Rogue One. This series follows off from Obi-Wan Kenobi in depicting the formation of the rebellion, led here primarily by Mon Mothma ((played by Genevieve O’Reilly from the Young Victoria), and Luthen Rael (played by Stellan Skarsgård from Mamma Mia! and Nymphomaniac). This show also stars Adria Arjona (from Morbius), Forest Whitaker (from the Last King of Scotland) and Kyle Soller (from Anna Karenina).

A Jazzman’s Blues
Where to watch: Netflix
Now, it’s time for some of the good old blues!
A Jazzman’s Blues is the latest film from Tyler Perry (the creator of Madea, and an actor who appeared in Gone Girl and Don’t Look Up). This film premiered at this year’s edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, and it tells the tale of Bayou Boy (played by Joshua Boone from Mother’s Milk), a fictional singer. He grew up in a small town, experiencing tons of racism from all the local white people. He fell in love with a light-skin woman (played by Solea Pfeiffer from the Broadway run of Hamilton), and the two planned to live a long life together. But her mother ships her away to marry a rich white man, and Bayou decides to figure out how he can enter that rich world as well to try to win her back.

Don’t Worry Darling
Where to watch: Cinemas
Last but not least, it’s time for the film that’s inspired so much drama online!
Don’t Worry Darling is the second film directed by Olivia Wilde (who previously made Booksmart), and it’s a vastly different change of pace. It stars Florence Pugh (from Midsommar and Black Widow) and Harry Styles (from Dunkirk) as a young married couple. He works for a company called the Victory Project, which also created the picture-perfect suburb the two live in. Pugh’s character isn’t completely content to stay at home, cook, clean and keep an orderly house like her husband and his employers say she should do. Instead she wants to learn exactly what the company does, and why they’re so secretive about it. This film also stars Gemma Chan (from Eternals), Nick Kroll (from Big Mouth), and Chris Pine (from Star Trek).
