Good Night Oppy
Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video
Let’s start this week off with a documentary about one of humanity’s greatest accomplishments!
Good Night Oppy, which played at TIFF this year, is a documentary about Opportunity. Not just opportunity in general, but the Mars Rover known as Opportunity. NASA initially launched the rover back in 2003 expecting it to only operate for 90 sols (which means a single solar cycle on Mars, the equivalent of a day on Earth). But Oppy kept on scouring the surface of the red planet for almost 15 years. Narrated by Angela Bassett (from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), this doc looks at the highs, the lows, and the beautiful surfaces of Mars as adventured by the little rover that could.

Welcome to Chippendales
Where to watch: Disney+
Next up, something a little risque!
Welcome to Chippendales is a new show starring Kumail Nanjiani (from the Big Sick and Silicon Valley) as Somen Banerjee, the founder of Chippendales. That’s the first ever male stripping show designed explicitly for women. Banerjee was an Indian immigrant who came to America in search of a better life, and found it when women started throwing money at men in tight thongs. He teams up with choreographer Nick De Noia (played by Murray Bartlett from the White Lotus) to create the new sensation. But tensions between the two threaten to disrupt everything they’ve built, until an explosive finale.

Now, it’s time for an adventure into an unusual realm!

Strange World is a new Disney animated film. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal (from Zodiac and Spider-Man: Far From Home) as Searcher Clade, the son of the famous adventurer known as Jaeger Clade (played by Dennis Quaid from Far From Heaven and the Day After Tomorrow). Jaeger disappeared several years ago, and now Searcher has grown up and formed his own family including his son Ethan (played by stand-up comedian Jaboukie Young-White). One day, the President (played by Lucy Liu from Charlie’s Angels and Kill Bill) comes to their door asking them to travel to a strange world to help save their world. And once they get there, it looks like it’s time for a family reunion.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
Where to watch: Disney+
Next up, a holiday treat from Marvel!

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was conceived by James Gunn, and shot entirely during the making of the third Guardians of the Galaxy film. In this, Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt from Jurassic World) is feeling down when he realizes it’s Christmas. Missing Gamora isn’t helping at all. Mantis (played by Pom Klementieff from Oldboy) and Drax (played by Dave Bautista from Army of the Dead) decide to cheer him up, and they figure the best way to do it is go to earth and kidnap Star-Lord’s childhood hero Kevin Bacon (played by Kevin Bacon from Footloose). All in the spirit of giving, right?

Wednesday

Lastly, it’s the return of everyone’s favourite spooky family, and a goth icon!
Wednesday is a new show about the Addams Family, but specifically focusing on the deadly daughter Wednesday Addams (played by young scream queen Jenna Ortega from Scream and X). She’s been expelled from her high school, and ends up going to her parents alma mater, the Nevermore Academy. While struggling to fit in with her mostly normal peers, she discovers a series of murders in the town seemingly connected to a centuries old mystery. She investigates with the help of her family and some new friends, discovering that one of her teachers (played by Christina Ricci from the Addams Family) may have a sinister desire. This show also stars Gwendoline Christie (from Game of Thrones), Percy Hynes White (from I Like Movies), and Jaime McShane (from Bloodline).
