The greatest hero in all of video games has entered the MUST-WATCH for the first time ever! Will Japan’s greatest plumber earn the top spot, or could it go to a modern day revenge drama? Perhaps a show about the French Resistance? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Transatlantic

Where to watch: Netflix

Let’s start this week with a miniseries about fighting unjust oppression!

Transatlantic is a new show about the Emergency Rescue Committee. That was a resistance group aligned with the French Resistance that attempted to help people escape from Nazi-occupied France. It was created in part by Varian Fry (played by Cory Michael Smith from Gotham), an American journalist living in France. The show takes a multi-pronged approach to the resistance, showing numerous perspectives on the incredible pains it took for anyone to flee the Nazis. This show also stars Gillian Jacobs (from Community), Corey Stoll (from Ant-Man), and Moritz Bleibtreu (from Run Lola Run).

Beef stars Ali Wong (from Always Be My Maybe) and Steven Yeun (from Invincible) as two people struggling in their lives. She’s an unhappy housewife struggling with depression, and he’s a contractor struggling financially. One day, the two encounter each other in an incident of road rage. This spirals into an ongoing beef between them, one that turns brutal and just plain mean. Strangely enough, the two seem to find fulfillment in their beef with each other. This show also features Joseph Lee (from Searching), Ashley Park (from Emily in Paris), and Justin H. Min (from After Yang).

Tiny Beautiful Things

Now, let’s look into some self-help!

Tiny Beautiful Things is based on a book by Cheryl Strayed. The show stars Kathryn Hahn (from Glass Onion and WandaVision) as a middle-aged married woman with a teenage daughter. Her husband wants to split up, she has a tense relationship with her daughter, and she’s not sure what she wants to do with the rest of her life. After a friend invites her to start writing an advice column, she also begins writing letters to her 22 year old self to figure out how to get her life back on track. A lot of this involves discussing her relationship with her deceased mother (played by Merritt Wever from Run).

Operation Fortune: Ruse du Guerre is the latest film from Guy Ritchie (the director behind Snatch, the Gentlemen, and Sherlock Holmes). He reteams with Jason Statham (from Wrath of Man and the Crank series) who plays the superspy Orson Fortune. His latest mission is to track down Ukrainian mobsters who have stolen a secret device that’s worth billions. He teams up with a famous actor (played by Josh Hartnett from Lucky Number Slevin) to break into a high class event and hopefully steal the device. This film also stars Aubrey Plaza (from the White Lotus), Cary Elwes (from Saw), and Hugh Grant (from Paddington 2).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Where to watch: Cinemas

Here we go!

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is out in cinemas now! Adapting the long-running video game franchise to film for the second time (and first time in an animated format), this film stars Chris Pratt (from Parks and Recreation and Guardians of the Galaxy) and Charlie Day (from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Horrible Bosses) as Mario and Luigi. Working as plumbers in Brooklyn, the two of them find themselves travelling through a warp pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom. They get separated, with Luigi trapped with the villainous Bowser (played by Jack Black from School of Rock), and Mario ending up with Princess Peach (played by Anya Taylor-Joy from the Queen’s Gambit). Determined to re-unite, the two will have to do whatever they can to get back to their plumbing business in Brooklyn. This film also stars Seth Rogen (from Pineapple Express), Keegan-Michael Key (from Schmigadoon!), and Charles Martinet (the voice of the original Mario).
