Judd Trump rates his 17-16 victory over Mark Williams at the World Snooker Championship as probably his best ever win, in an instant classic at the Crucible.
The 2019 world champion had forged commanding leads at 7-1 and 12-5, but the veteran found his best form and stormed back, eventually taking the lead himself at 16-15.
Trump held his nerve, though, and won the final two frames of the epic contest to book his spot in the Crucible final, starting on Sunday.
The Ace has won all the sport’s biggest events, but after the rollercoaster of emotions in Sheffield, he felt that this win could be his finest ever.
‘There’s just so many emotions going through that game,’ Trump told the BBC.
‘At one point it looked like I was going to, not win easy because I knew he was going to come back at some point, but I thought if I could just share the frames…but he played unbelievable.
‘I was actually enjoying watching him and that was one of the first times I’ve ever enjoyed watching anyone. He was incredible and I was just praying he might start missing towards the end.
‘He made a couple of mistakes and I sort of had all my luck in the last frame. It’s a shot to nothing, you’re a bit lucky to go in, but I can line it up to the best of my ability. For two of them to go in, it’s your day.
‘I think it’s probably my best ever win.’
He added on Eurosport: ‘It was such a crazy game. A once in a lifetime kind of game.’
Trump began the tournament without much momentum, struggling for his best form and belief, admitting that he was not expecting to go deep at the Crucible at all.
‘Incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved,’ he said. ‘I came here not expecting anything, probably the first time since I was 17. Honestly, I didn’t expect to win my first game, I wasn’t playing well.
‘As the tournament’s gone on I’ve started hitting the ball better and better. Against [Anthony] McGill he really pushed me and I started to play well. It’s nice to know I can do it on the biggest stage. It feels like the whole season’s worth it now, it’s been a tough season, but when you get wins like that it’s monumental. To get over the line is something you’re going to remember forever.’
Waiting in the final for Trump will be John Higgins or Ronnie O’Sullivan and whoever it is, the 32-year-old will fancy his chances.
‘If I can take the feeling of what I had out there, it was sort of similar to how I felt against John Higgins in the [2019] final, I felt that good,’ he said.
‘If I can get off to a good start against whoever it is I truly believe my best game is very close.’
