Nadine Dorries in toe-curling live interview – claims Partygate is huge ‘Remainer plot’

The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport took part in several disastrous media appearances within a few hours this morning, later clashing with BBC TV presenter Charlie Stayt over whether she had spoken to the Prime Minister since yesterday.

The Metropolitan Police is investigating the Downing St party scandal and has allegedly been handed a photo of the PM drinking beer at his ‘lockdown birthday party’ in June 2020. But Ms Dorries told Times Radio that the ‘Partygate scandal’ was an orchestrated plot against Mr Johnson by pro-Eu supporters.

She said: “There are a small number of voices, whether they are people who were ardent supporters of Remain, who see this as their last opportunity to reverse Brexit. That certainly is at play with a group.”

She then went onto BBC Breakfast, where she grimaced through several tense exchanges with presenter Mr Stayt, who said he was “confused” why she couldn’t answer basic questions.

In an earlier interview on the Today Programme, the Culture Secretary mixed up two Tory MPs with similar names while defending Mr Johnson.

When asked about Nick Gibb and Aaron Bell, the latest two Tory MPs to call for the Prime Minister to resign, she replied: “I’ll talk about Martin Vickers who is out there supporting the Prime Minister, listing on Channel 4 News the other night the huge number of funding and initiatives that he’s delivered in his constituency.’

Martin Vickers, the MP for Cleethorpes, never appeared on Channel 4 News. Instead she appeared to mean Matt Vickers, the MP for Stockton South, who told Channel 4 on Wednesday: ‘Teesside’s got a lot to be happy about.’

During the toe-curling exchange live on BBC TV Stayt asked: “Have you spoken to the prime minister recently, in the last 24 hours?”

Confused at the question, Dorries fired back: “Why? Why are you asking me that question?”

“I’d like to know,” Stayt replied.

“We’ve communicated,” Dorries bluntly informed, to which Stayt continued: “I’m really confused, is that a difficult question?

“The implication was that he was going to do business slightly differently.

“My question is a pretty fundamental one, which is, the impression we are supposed to take now is that Boris Johnson admits that things should have been done differently.

“Is he exactly the same in your book?” to which Dorries bluntly replied: “What I would say is that the prime minister promised to change.”

Viewers of BBC Breakfast took to social media to express their views on the awkward conversation between Stayt and Dorries.
