Think the world has run out of ways to sell Nashville hot chicken? Restaurant chains are not there yet.
Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit and Dog Haus have all come up with variations on chicken sandwiches that will be on their menus in February. And other chains have new, attention-grabbing menu items as well.
Here are some recent announcements.
KFC: The Louisville chain has revived a way to serve its chicken tenders: wrapping them in flour tortillas.
Beginning Feb. 6, Kentucky Fried Chicken Wraps will be available at participating locations at two for $5, according to a news release from the fast food chain.
There will be two kinds. The Classic Chicken Wrap features an extra crispy chicken tender, pickle slices and mayonnaise. The Spicy Slaw Chicken Wrap comes with coleslaw and spicy sauce instead of the mayonnaise.
This is not the first time KFC has served wraps, formerly called Twister Wraps, but they have been off the menu for several years.
KFC also announced it would be serving Starry, a lemon-lime soft drink from PepsiCo that replaces Sierra Mist. Taco Bell and other restaurants that serve Pepsi products will be making the move. kfc.com
Dickey’s Barbecue Pit: The Dallas-based chain has announced a couple of limited-time menu items arriving Feb. 6.
The Atomic Barbecue Chicken Sandwich is a collaboration with Dickey’s virtual kitchen, Wing Boss. It’s made with smoked chicken breast, pickles, onion and Wing Boss’ Atomic Sauce as well as Dickey’s Sweet Barbecue Sauce.
The Loaded Nacho Cheese Kielbasa Sausage is stuffed with taco-seasoned beef and pork, tortilla chips, and jalapeño beans with cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, according to a news release.
Dickey’s didn’t provide a price for either item. dickeys.com
Dog Haus: This Pasadena-based chain of fast casual restaurants has turned the Nashville hot chicken craze into a Nashville Hot Chicken Sausage.
It will be available in February, launching the chain’s Absolute Würst Sausage Series, which will bring out a new sausage every month, according to a news release. Dog Haus will donate $1 for each sale to the No Kid Hungry campaign.
It can be ordered on a stick for around $7.49 or in King’s Hawaiian Sweet Rolls for $7.99. doghaus.com
Taco Bell: The Irvine-based fast food giant is also experimenting with nacho cheese. It has begun serving a Crispy Melt Taco made with cheese sauce as well as a blend of three shredded cheeses. It is available with ground beef or black beans at $2.49. tacobell.com
Wienerschnitzel: Chief executive officer J.R. Galardi’s plan is to play to this Newport Beach chain’s strengths, and that includes using hot dog buns for foods other than hot dogs.
The chain is currently selling a shrimp po’boy and a meatball sandwich for a limited time.
“We have these delicious steamed hot dog buns in our store. What other fun items can we put in a hot dog bun?” Galardi said in a phone interview last fall. “It’s not your traditional meatball sub in a French loaf.”
Prices for the meatball sandwich range by location but are usually around $4.79. The po’boy runs around $5.49. wienerschnitzel.com
