Natasha Jonas unified the super-welterweight division with a convincing win over WBC champion Patricia Berghult on Saturday night at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.

After 10 rounds of back-and-forth action, the WBO queen picked up a lopsided unanimous decision win courtesy of the ringside judges who scored the fight 99-91, 100-90, and 100-90 in her favour.

The proud scouser repeatedly said ‘there’s no place like home’ ahead of her unification bout in Liverpool and after listening to the pop she got from her fellow scousers, it’s clear to see why she feels like that.

Jonas and Berghult wasted no time getting after it in their unification fight and the first three rounds were hotly contested and full of action.

The two women continued to go toe-to-toe through the middle rounds, with Jonas often landing the harder shots but she was unable to follow them up and potentially close the show.

Jonas took over in round eight and appeared to be on the verge of taking out Berghult, who survived the round and ultimately ended up toughing out the final two frames.

Berghult won all 15 of her previous professional bouts, including a points victory over Britain’s WBA super-welterweight champion Hannah Rankin, who’ll fight Terri Harper later this month.

Jonas claimed a world title at the third time of asking with a convincing second-round knockout of super-welterweight champion Chris Namus earlier this year on the undercard of Kell Brook vs Amir Khan.

The mother of one has endured a rollercoaster professional career that appeared to be over in 2019, in just her seventh professional fight, when she suffered a shock stoppage defeat by Viviane Obenauf.

Since then, Jonas has rebuilt her career with some good wins, but then twice fell short in world title fights. The first was a controversial draw against Doncaster’s Terri Harper for the WBC super-featherweight belt in August 2020.

Almost a year later, the first female boxer to compete for Great Britain and the first woman to compete in the sport for Team GB at the Olympic Games was outpointed by undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor in May 2021.

Now, she holds the WBO and WBC super-welterweight titles.
