National flu cases on the rise: Here’s how you can stay healthy

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has confirmed that influenza cases around South Africa is on the rise. Influenza — or flu — clusters are attacking schools and places of work and have left thousands of locals feeling completely under the weather.

While flu spreads like a wildfire, it is completely possible to stay safe and healthy this flu season. Here are a few steps you can take to keep yourself and your family safe.

Flu season is in full swing

The 2023 influenza season has kicked off and is already wreaking havoc at both schools and workplaces.

According to the NICD, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 has been one of the circulating seasonal influenza strains following its emergence in 2009.

Children and adults have found themselves feeling under the weather mostly with mild symptoms. IOL, however, reports that influenza may cause severe illness, which may require hospitalisation or even cause death.

How to stay safe and healthy

Luckily there are ways to stay safe during these difficult times. Here is a list of things to do to stay healthy.

  • Get a flu shot which are free at all government clinics.
  • Stay home from work or school to avoid spreading the virus.
  • Take all the medication prescribed to you by a healthcare professional.
  • Keep frequently used surfaces clean by using a disinfectant.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or handkerchief when you cough or sneeze. Remember to never use your hands.
  • Practice good wellness habits such as eating healthy meals, staying active and getting enough sleep at night.
