Natural solution removes yellow stains from pillows by bleaching the stain out

Pillows often turn yellow due to sweat because it contains a chemical called urea.

The chemical is a byproduct of sweat that breaks down and turns into ammonia over time. This is what causes yellow stains.

Luckily, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared how they remove yellow stains from pillows.

Mrs Hinch has more than 4.6 million followers on Instagram and often shares her cleaning, home and gardening tips on the social media platform.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own solutions for solving cleaning problems.

On one such group, Facebook user Maureen Salisbury asked: “I have seen somewhere a remedy for yellow stains on pillows. Can anyone help?”

The post was inundated with responses but the most popular suggestion was to use sunlight.

Shirley Keywood commented: “Sunlight and soap any stain and hang in the sun, it will bleach the stain out.”

Dorota Matuszewska replied: “Someone in the group suggested putting it in the sun. Takes a bit of time, but mine is getting very white.”

Grace Adamo agreed and wrote: “Sunshine. Italian mum’s tried and true fixit.

“Sometimes she would throw soapy water over it again, until she was satisfied, then rewash and dry. May take days or more, but worth it.”

Most people will be able to pop their pillows in the sun either on a balcony, in the garden or in a window.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using hydrogen peroxide, nappy soak, Elbow Grease and pillow protectors.

Siobhan O’Connell commented: “Hydrogen peroxide and water mixed with baking soda. Soak or soak overnight in white vinegar.”

Vivien Rowe replied: “Wash in a washing machine then once dried, use pillow protectors.”

Margaret Audrey said: “I put mine in a sink with hot water and nappy soak. Leave them for a couple of hours and they are white as snow and stains are gone.

“Rinse in the sink and then once water is all drained, put them in the spin cycle.

“Don’t wash them ever in washing machine, I learnt. It wrecks them. If blood stains, spray with vanish 24 hours before soaking.”

Anne Gogarty Lyddy suggested: “A light spray of Elbow Grease, wait 10 minutes and then wash as usual. Job done!”
