A Navy SEAL died Tuesday from injuries sustained during a weekend training session, military officials said.
The SEAL Team 8 member, who was not publicly identified pending family notification, was hurt Saturday during a training incident in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Task & Purpose reported.
The SEAL died at a hospital in Norfolk. He was assigned to Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach, according to the Navy Times.
“Naval Special Warfare is committed to supporting the service member’s family and our sailors who lost a teammate during this difficult time,” Navy officials told the site in a statement.
Details of the deadly accident remain under investigation. Additional information will be released “at the appropriate time,” Lt. Cmdr. Kara Handley, spokeswoman for Naval Special Warfare Command, told Task & Purpose.
Fatal training accidents involving SEALs are relatively uncommon, but nine SEALs died in training mishaps between 2013 and 2016, according to the military news outlet.
Navy officials plan to release more information Wednesday, WAVY reported.
SEAL Team 8, which has eight operational platoons, is concentrated in the Caribbean, Africa and the Mediterranean, according to the Navy Times.
A message left early Wednesday for Handley was not immediately returned.
