The NBA Summer League concludes Monday night with a championship game between the Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers. The league didn’t wait for the final matchup to declare its MVP.
Ahead of the title contest, the NBA named Cam Whitmore its Summer League MVP. The rookie has averaged 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.0 steals for the 5-0 Rockets.

Houston selected Whitmore with the No. 20 pick in last month’s draft after averaging 12.5 points in his lone year at Villanova. The 6-foot-7 forward made a strong first impression on a young Rockets squad that has dazzled in Las Vegas despite shutting down Jabari Smith Jr. after two dominant games.
Amen Thompson, the No. 4 pick this year, also ended his Summer League experience early following an ankle injury. That gave the spotlight to the 19-year-old Whitmore, who dropped 25 points, four rebounds, and four assists in Sunday’s semifinal win over the Utah Jazz.
It seems premature to pick an MVP with one game remaining, but Whitmore can validate the selection with another strong showing against Cleveland. The championship game starts at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
