Dwane Casey announced Sunday that he will step down as the head coach of the Detroit Pistons after five seasons with the team.
Casey, 65, made the announcement on the heels of the Pistons’ 103-81 loss to the Chicago Bulls in the regular-season finale for both teams.
“Tom (Gores, Pistons owner) is giving me an opportunity to move into the front office,” Casey said. “I’m excited to go to the next phase of my life. Time to spend more time with my family. This team is on the right track. They probably need to hear a new voice. This is my decision.”
The Pistons posted a 121-263 record in five seasons under Casey’s watch. The team made the playoffs once during that time (2018-19) but was swept in the first round by the Milwaukee Bucks.
Casey was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2018.
