With Jeff Van Gundy now out as the third member of ESPN’s NBA broadcast team, the Worldwide Leader in Sports is expected to make an internal move to fill the void. But one of the reported candidates, analyst JJ Redick, is not going over well with the fans.
Redick joined ESPN just two years ago and is already one of their primary analysts on NBA coverage. But he isn’t exactly loved, neither for his analysis on set or for his broadcast work with a headset.
Redick has some supporters, but the vast majority of responses to news that he is a leading candidate to replace Van Gundy have been negative. Just about everyone feels that he lacks the charisma to take on a role like that:
JJ has the personality of a block of wood. I don't want to hear him calling more games https://t.co/9IxemJ8h62

Literally one of the worst in game commentators on the air this past year.
Made C. Webb look like Marv Albert in his Prime. https://t.co/unRdw37tRV

ESPN didn’t just fire some of its highest-paid talent just to bring on equally in-demand replacements though. A lot of people at the company are going to be given more responsibilities as the network continues to reorganize itself.
If that means potentially giving JJ Redick one of the best gigs in broadcasting, then there’s not much we can do about it.
