For anyone who has followed the sport over the last several years, it’s clear that the NBA has a bit of a flopping problem.

From offensive players exaggerating contact on drives to the rim to defenders falling down in hopes of a charge call, the amount of embellishment in the NBA can rival international soccer at times.

The prevalence of flopping has caused many fans to complain about how games are officiated, and it appears that the NBA is gearing up to respond to those complaints.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the NBA Competition Committee will discuss potential in-game penalties for flopping. The penalties would result in free throws, similar to the ones granted when a technical foul is called.

A trial of the new rule, if approved, would be possible at this year’s Summer League.

Many NBA fans were happy to see the league take a stand on flopping.

“Incredibly necessary. Also, don’t give stars preferential treatment for this,” one fan said. “Call it, even if it results in an ejection, & live with it. It’s the only way to clean it up.”

“They do this in college and seems to work fine, they only call it on defensive players it feels like though so I wonder what it’ll look like in the NBA,” another fan said.

“Theyre only gonna enforce it for a month,” another fan predicted.

Time will tell if the rule influences how certain players approach the game.
