Kristaps Porzingis could reportedly make an unexpected decision this offseason.
According to Spotrac’s Keith Smith, there’s increased chatter about Porzingis exercising his option to stay with the Washington Wizards for $36 million next season. Most onlookers thought he’d opt out and sign a long-term extension before Wizards brought in president Michael Winger to lead a new front office.
Observers are now wondering if the new regime will trade Porzingis if he takes the player option.
“Very interesting,” DC Sports Buzz wrote. “This is great news for Wizards fans who want to see Porzingis traded. Looking more and more likely.”

“Porzingis is an interesting trade candidate on a one-year deal if Winger really rebuilds,” Sam Quinn of CBS Sports said. “He just had his healthiest (and best) season. There’s no long-term commitment. His skill set is unique. I can think of a few teams that should poke around if the price is low enough.”

“I don’t think this is bad because expiring Porzingis off a healthy year is a great trade asset,” a fan claimed. “Very telling that the change in Wizards leadership changes his outlook so much.”

Playing his most games (65) since 2016-17, Porzingis registered a career-high 23.2 points per game last season. He also posted the best effective field-goal percentage (.565) of his career while tallying 8.4 boards and 1.5 blocks.
This offseason could represent a sensible time for the 27-year-old to pursue a long-term contract, but Porzingis may have other plans.
