Jeff Van Gundy hasn’t coached in the NBA since 2007, but one team is reportedly intrigued about a potential comeback.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, via the New York Post, the Dallas Mavericks “plan to gauge” Van Gundy’s interest in joining their staff as an assistant coach. They’re also interested in another former New York Knicks head coach, Jeff Hornacek.

Van Gundy last appeared on an NBA sideline when coaching the Houston Rockets from 2003 to 2007. He got fired after not getting past the first round in four seasons.
The Miami Heat became the first No. 8 seed since Van Gundy’s 1998-99 Knicks to reach the NBA Finals. New York had a 59.0 winning percentage during his tenure.
Van Gundy coached the U.S. national team in the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup and 2019 FIBA World Cup. However, he’s spent the last 16 years calling NBA games for ESPN.
Perhaps an assistant role could be a stepping stone if the 61-year-old wanted to pursue another head-coaching opportunity. Dallas appears to desire an experienced voice for Jason Kidd’s staff after missing the playoffs in a disappointing season that ended with them resting starters rather than competing for a play-in spot.
