LaMelo Ball exited Monday’s game with a significant injury.
The Charlotte Hornets announced that the All-Star point guard suffered a fracture in his right ankle during their 117-106 win over the Detroit Pistons. It’s likely a season-ending injury for the 21-year-old.
Fans are crushed for Ball, who was averaging 23.4 points and 8.5 assists per game in his third NBA season.
“Damn. This is terrible,” a fan wrote.
“Just as this team starts getting hot, this is brutal,” Cam Gaskins of WTV News said.
“Yikes. [Obviously] a season ender but gotta hope he can be back in top shape for start of next season,” The Athletic’s John Hollinger commented.
“That family is cursed,” a fan wrote. Ball’s older brother, Lonzo will miss the rest of the season.
“Get well soon my man,” a fan said. “Super discouraging and frustrating for LaMelo, but I hope he gets it right and moves forward strong this off-season.”
Ball missed the first 13 games of the season with an ankle injury he re-aggravated a week into his return. The 2020-21 Rookie of the Year sat out 11 more games, causing the Hornets to go 7-20.
The Hornets seemed to finally find a groove with five straight wins. Ball posted double-digit assists in five of his last six games before Monday night, including his third triple-double of the season on Feb. 15.
