MANILA, Philippines—Graduating guard Fran Yu caught fire in the second half where he scored all of his game-high 19 points to lead Letran to another victory on Sunday.
But as good as Fran was offensively, he was more pleased with how he impacted the game on the defensive end.
“I don’t have any other advantage other than my speed and peskiness so that’s what I’m doing. Coach Bonnie (Tan) also likes players who are defense-first,” Yu said in Filipino after the Knights’ 69-50 win against San Sebastian on Sunday.
The 5-foot-8 Yu currently leads the league in steals averaging 2.4 a game.
“I’m a team player. I don’t care how many points I score as long as we win and I get my teammates involved,” he added.
Yu also said he only has his sights set on the ultimate goal which is a third consecutive NCAA crown for Letran.
“As a player, I am not focused on my individual game. I don’t aspire for those types of awards, those are just blessings. What we really want is the three-peat,” Yu, the reigning Finals MVP, said.
