NCIS Hawai’i star Yasmine Al-Bustami on vanishing from the show

Actress Yasmine Al-Bustami has explained away her disappearance from hit US show NCIS: Hawai’i, saying she has been spending time on other projects.

Yasmine plays Lucy Tara on the CBS series, which is filmed in location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but avid viewers would have noticed her character took a backseat earlier this year, before being completely absent from further episodes.

The star, who is also known for her roles in The Originals and I Ship It, told The Daily Express US she’d returned to the mainland US to spend time with her friends and family as well as traveling and fulfilling some other work commitments.

During that period, Yasmine also took time to feature in The Chosen, a historical drama focusing on the life of Jesus (played by Jonathan Roumie).

The show is set during the 1st Century in Roman-occupied Israel and Yasmine plays Ramah, the daughter of a wine merchant who becomes a follower of Jesus after witnessing him performing a miracle at a wedding.

She is currently working in her home state of Texas on season four of show, which is expected to be coming out at some point in 2024 and is shot near Dallas.

In an exclusive interview with the The Daily Express US, Yasmine reflected on how The Chosen compared to NCIS: Hawai’i: “It’s very different. It is a completely different world than I’ve ever done.

“I’ve never played in a historical piece, which I didn’t know I would love so much and love it so much and it’s a blast, especially with a story like this.

“It’s something that has been an experience that I was just not expecting and it’s absolutely… to be able to work at home from Texas, Dallas, so that’s always nice to come home.

“The character’s obviously very different from the one on NCIS: Hawai’i, so getting to work those muscles was very different.”

She went on to say: “With NCIS: Hawai’i, the stunts are really fun and obviously Ramah doesn’t have much on this, but even the supporting characters around me are also very different types and the storylines are also very different.”

The actress went on to address how she struck a balance with filming The Chosen and NCIS: Hawai’i. She said: “I hope well, I tried. But there was a lot of communication on both sides, both parties trying to make everything work and thankfully it worked out and this story is working out, so I’m very thankful about that.”

On the response from The Chosen fans to Ramah, Yasmine said: “I hope good. So far so good and I hope it continues to be good. Everyone’s so supportive. Anytime anyone comes up or they express whatever they’re feeling about the character or the show itself, it’s nothing but graciousness and kindness and very supportive.”

There’s no word yet on when Yasmine will be returning to the action procedural but it appears the star is going to be working on both shows. Yasmine landed both NCIS Hawai’i and The Chosen at a similar time with the star seeing the two shows taking off in their own right.
