NCS football playoffs: Foothill’s semifinal delayed because of COVID issues

Foothill will play its North Coast Section Division II football semifinal on Saturday, a day later than scheduled, because of COVID-19 protocols at the Pleasanton school, coach Greg Haubner said Thursday night.

A Foothill player tested positive for the virus last week and unvaccinated players were not able to practice until Thursday, Haubner added.

The third-seeded Falcons are traveling to Rohnert Park to play second-seeded Rancho Cotate for a trip to the final. The game Saturday is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The winner will play top-seeded San Ramon Valley or No. 4 seed Campolindo in the final next weekend. Campo visits SRV on Friday night.

Foothill beat San Leandro 39-13 in the first round last weekend behind four touchdown passes from Nick Walsh.

According to the Pleasanton Unified School District, rapid antigen testing is provided on campus to allow students who are unvaccinated and exposed at school to be eligible for modified quarantine, provided the student tests negative and doesn’t show symptoms.

Under what it calls Shortened Quarantine Testing, the district states on its website that “if either an unvaccinated student or the positive person was unmasked at the time of the school exposure, the close contact must quarantine at home. PUSD Pandemic Services offers testing off-campus by invitation only if a student may test out of the full quarantine per CDPH guidelines. This test takes place on Day 7 following exposure. If negative, the student may return to activities on Day 8 if they remain asymptomatic.”

The Foothill delay comes on the heels of news this week that Arcata forfeited its NCS Division VI semifinal against Justin-Siena because of COVID-19 issues.
