Nepal so far looked the brightest of the two teams as they put up some encouraging shows in their last two matches against much higher-ranked India and Kuwait, who have already booked semifinal tickets with back-to-back wins.
Led by Italian coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese, Nepal lost 3-1 in the opening match of the tournament to World No. 143 Kuwait and was followed by a 2-0 defeat to World No. 105 India. The 174th-ranked Himalayan side, however, made things difficult for hosts India in the first half and came close to taking the lead as well.
The quality of the Indian bench eventually got the better of the side with Sunil Chhetri and Naorem Mahesh Singh scoring goals in the second half. Nepal’s coach Vincenzo remarked that his players have the quality to beat India but lack the exposure to be a worthy opponent.
Pakistan, on the other hand, had a troubled arrival over visa issues followed by uninspiring results in the first two games as the side galloped eight goals in two games. The latest to reach the tournament, with some players reaching as late as six hours before the game, Pakistan were handed a 4-0 drubbing in the much-anticipated match against their rivals India.
The high attendance of the game also set the tempo for the tournament but Pakistan had little excuse to offer as they lost by a similar scoreline to Kuwait in the second game. Their faulty defense live only made them look worse as some of the individual errors were laughable.
