Driven by a group of celebrity chefs, a new pop-up restaurant in Los Angeles is giving people who wish they could get just a taste of the delicious dishes they see on shows like “Iron Chef” and “Chef’s Table” a chance to devour the food in real life.
“Food needs to be an experience and this is definitely an experience,” said “Bizarre Foods” chef Andrew Zimmern during a recent preview of Netflix Bites, the streaming network’s first pop-up restaurant, which opened June 30 and is already booked for the next few weeks.
Located on busy Fairfax Avenue in a brightly decorated patio space at the Short Stories Hotel, the restaurant is pretty much a screen-to-table experience since it features a robust menu created by eight acclaimed chefs from Netflix’s most popular food shows who are serving some of their famous TV dishes along with their other creations.
The pop-up is set to be open for about three months and advance reservations are recommended.
“For all of us to be here at the same time and all of us to put food on the same menu, first of all, is a great idea and experience. It also allows the folks who are fans of the shows to come to L.A. and enjoy something like this,” Zimmern added.
The participating chefs include Zimmern from Netflix’s “Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend.” The pop-up is serving his “grandmother’s meatloaf” dish, which is plated over mashed potatoes with a thick beef gravy.
Guests will also be able to order the Lady Zaza Pizza, which chef Ann Kim made famous on “Chef’s Table: Pizza.”
Another chef is Curtis Stone from “Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend,” who has several dishes on the menu including his whole crab curry that appeared on the show. Dominique Crenn, who was on both “Chef’s Table” and “Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend,” is serving her mushroom fricassee tart, which was featured on “Iron Chef.”
And fans of barbecue might want to wear loose-fitting pants because they’re going to be able to devour a filling order of “Chef’s Table: BBQ” star Rodney Scott’s as-seen-on-TV pulled whole hog with collards and ribs.
“People can taste what they’ve been seeing on the screen. To be a part of this Netflix Bites, to share what we do and bring something from South Carolina all the way to California, I thought it was a huge opportunity to show what South Carolina does,” Scott said as he walked around during the pop-up preview.
Chef Ming Tsai of “Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend” and dessert chefs Nadiya Hussain of “Nadiya Bakes” and Jacques Torres of “Nailed It!” are also featured at the eatery.
And since all of this great food needs to be washed down with equally great drinks, the pop-up’s menu has been filled with cocktails created by mixologists from Netflix’s “Drink Masters,” including Frankie Solarik, Julie Reiner, LP O’Brien and Kate Gerwin.
The outdoor restaurant itself even feels like you’re inside a TV show thanks to vibrant colors on pillows, tables and chairs and murals of all of the chefs emblazoned on the walls.
“It’s just a unique opportunity for people to come and taste all this different talent under one roof,” said Greg Lombardo, vice president of live experiences for Netflix. “From streaming to savoring we feel there’s a story in every bite.”
