Netflix will follow the U.S. team at the Women’s World Cup to produce a documentary series on their quest for a record third consecutive title, the streaming entertainment service company has announced.

The U.S. is the favorite to defend the title at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, which is the biggest in history and is set to kick off on Thursday.

Having lifted the titles in 2019 and 2015, the Americans are aiming for a “three-peat” Down Under.

This year, Vlatko Andonovski’s side is in Group E and they begin their campaign against first-timers Vietnam on Saturday. The Netherlands and Portugal are also in their group.

“The US Women’s World Cup Team will be the subject of our next sports docuseries!” Netflix
NFLX
tweeted on Monday.

“The series will follow the most decorated team in international soccer history (Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Alyssa Thompson & more) as they strive to capture their third World Cup title in a row.”

The show will be directed by two-time Emmy winner Rebecca Gitlitz and produced by Connor Schell.

Netflix said its cameras will follow the team players as well as coaches as it provides the audience with an inside look into the USWNT, which has won the World Cup four times.

“Viewers will get a first-hand look at the pressure, the euphoria, the joy, and the hardships that these world-class athletes experience as they strive to capture their third World Cup title in a row,” Netflix said in a statement.

“The series will capture all of the personal and team preparation on the road to their biggest FIFA World Cup. Throughout their tournament run, audiences will learn how this team stands on the shoulders of those who played before them, and how they continue to break the glass ceiling for equality in sports for women of the future.”

The show will also throw light on issues ranging from racial diversity, LGBTQ rights, equal pay, family, and motherhood.

Last week, at the ESPY
PY

SPY
Awards, the U.S. women’s team was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for their strength and determination, and fighting for pay parity in soccer.

It came after a California federal judge last year preliminarily approved the $24 million equal pay settlement between the U.S. Women’s National Team and the U.S. Soccer Federation, helping close an over 5-year-long dispute for wage equality.

In the past, Netflix has produced several sports docu-series such as Formula 1: Drive To Survive, Break Point, Bad Sport, Sunderland ‘Till I Die and others.
