Netflix’s Next Game Will Be Based On Popular K-Drama Kingdom

Netflix has announced the next game it’s working on, a “K-zombie action game” called Kingdom: The Blood.

The game will be based on the universe of the popular Korean television show Kingdom, which is available to stream on the platform. Kingdom is an interesting mashup. First of all, it’s a period piece, as it’s set during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty (1603). It’s both a political thriller and a zombie show, a brave mix but one that ends up working out well for Kingdom.

South Korean developer Action Square is leading the development of Kingdom: The Blood. Action Square has previously released titles like the co-op top-down shooter Anvil.

The trailer released by Action Square seems to point to the game being more focused on the zombies rather than the politics of Kingdom. It depicts a warrior fighting off a town of reanimated corpses and a couple of miscellaneous location shots from the game. According to the YouTube description, the trailer was entirely created “using in-game assets.”

The game is being developed with appropriate attention paid to Korean culture, with Netflix stating “Korean culture is treated with the utmost care in both gameplay and aesthetic.” The studio is using motion capture on a professional Korean sword dancer in order to accurately capture Korean-style sword combat with its animations.

You will be able to create and customise your own character, with diverse options of Korean traditional clothing available. Netflix has also stated the player will be able to travel to their zombie-infested take on the city of Hanyang in the 17th century.

Kingdom: The Blood will have a story mode that follows the plot of the Netflix series and a conquest mode which is described as “a sequence of diverse five-minute battles, in addition to epic multi-boss battles and intense player-versus-player combat.”

Kingdom: The Blood is planned to release on both PC and mobile. The release date is currently unknown.
