Looking through Australia’s WWI archives is easier for families and ancestry hunters now 95,000 records have been digitally preserved.

The collaboration between Ancestry.com and the National Archives of Australia has digitised records of people who applied to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force but were rejected, those discharged while still in training or who went on to serve within Australia only.

“By ensuring that these important stories are accessible and digitally preserved for generations to come, we can contribute to the commemoration and safeguarding of this crucial chapter of Australia’s military history,” Ancestry’s Jason Reeve said.

Project co-ordinators believe the records shine a light on an important cohort in WWI that has been overlooked.

National Archives senior curator Anne-Marie Conde said it was vital the records were digitally preserved to gain insights into Australian life in the early 1900s.

“The most common reason for rejection was on medical grounds, but there were all kinds of reasons a person could be rejected, and together they offer compelling insights into the beliefs and world-views of the day,” she said.

The records join a vast archive of more than 376,000 First Australian Imperial Force service records available to the public.
