On Friday afternoon, news broke that Kyrie Irving has requested a trade away from the Brooklyn Nets before this month’s Feb. 9 trade deadline.
NBA insider Shams Charania says this decision came as the result of some failed contract extension negotiations between Kyrie and the Nets.
“The Nets offered Kyrie Irving a contract extension that had some stipulations in it… I’m told that his side was vehemently against any stipulations in an extension,” Charania said during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
Kyrie is currently playing on the final season of his four-year, $136.5 million contract with the Nets, meaning he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this coming offseason.
If the Nets want to get any value out of their superstar point guard, they’ll have to trade him before next week’s deadline.
Kyrie has been playing excellent basketball in recent weeks, scoring more than 30 points in six of his last eight games with the Nets. The eight-time All-Star is averaging 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game so far this year.
The Nets are currently fourth in the Eastern Conference.
