Founded by Stirling Barrett in 2013 in New Orleans, Krewe is a seriously stylish eyewear and sunglasses brand that I can’t get enough of. I own about six of their chic styles and don the shades everywhere I go- that means when I’m walking around in New York, hanging out by the pool or on a beach or off on one of my frequent globetrotting trips to destinations such as Europe, Mexico, Africa and India.
No matter where I am or what I’m wearing, I get compliments on my Krewe designs right and left which makes me appreciate how cool they are that much more.
Barrett debuted his brand to the world by peddling the frames around New Orleans festivals from a mobile cart attached to a bike. The masses quickly latched on, and Krewe developed a cult following. Fast forward to today, and the company has opened multiple retail stores across the US, including compact boutiques and its largest location and flagship, Maison du Krewe New Orleans.
Most recently, Krewe made a splash in New York with the opening of the Maison du Krewe in the Meatpacking District. The company is celebrating its arrival in the city with a bit of NOLA flair: a good ol’ fashioned crawfish boil that will see proceeds of ticket sales going to Memorial Sloan Kettering.
Tickets can be purchased through this link. On the week before the big event, Barrett shares what he loves most about his hometown of New Orleans.
What do you love most about NOLA and why?
This is going to be a multi-part answer. New Orleans is a steward of 100+ year old culture. Creativity and personal expression are highly encouraged here, which is what the brand is inspired by. So much so that every house has multiple glue guns, a costume closet, a healthy wig collection and the goods to bedazzle an outfit in minutes. Finally, as a plant fanatic, there is nowhere better to be when the city is in bloom.
Favorite spot in NOLA?
Maison du KREWE’s balcony like it’s going out of style. Post up, people watching during the day as the bubble machine is rolling.
Hidden gems in NOLA?
Hearing the brass bands practicing in the neighborhood leading up to Mardi Gras is a real treat. Orchid shopping at the Belle Orchid Farm.
Ultimate weekend in NOLA?
Hopping on bikes and riding through the city, stopping at restaurants, hotel bars (favorites are The Columns and The Chloe) and friends’ houses along the way ending with a big dinner party, preferably on a balcony. In the Spring, an early morning walk through the Garden District before biking.
Best culinary finds in NOLA?
Best export is Crystal Hot Sauce and pepper seasonings. We are really into natural wine (as proven by our wine parlor in NYC &HOLIDAY) and there are some great finds around town. Keife + Co. to grab a bottle, The Tell Me Bar to grab a glass and Coquette to grab a meal alongside a great wine program
Best restaurants in NOLA right now?
Current answer has been our house for a dinner party! Other than that, my favorites are Coquette in the Garden District, Justine in the Quarter where Justin and Robby always keep the vibes alive, Clancys when you want a good martini and Parkway for po-boys
The NOLA souvenir to snag is…
A pair of KREWE sunnies or a great wig custom fitted and the iconic Fifi Mahoneys in the Quarter
