The new Pinole Pizza and Deli has a slightly different, perhaps more party-forward mission than some eateries. Its owners want to encourage you to have family and friends over tonight.
The family-owned restaurant is run by the Alkaheli family – Ahmed and his sons, Mohammed and Ali. The brothers were born and raised in Richmond. Ahmed emigrated from Yemen more than 20 years ago, according to Mohammed. This is the family’s first restaurant, and it’s geared toward helping people who are having guests over or catering for a party, as well as individuals or couples dining out.
“We just wanted to do something for our community and neighbors,” says Mohammed.
The eatery opened about seven weeks ago and the family is still ironing out its menu offerings. They’re expecting to offer a shawarma pizza topped with grilled vegetables and chicken soon, he says.
Additional pizza varieties include more traditional options such as four cheese, all meat or veggie combinations, alongside pizza topped with shrimp or barbecue chicken. Rice plates with beef, chicken or fish are offered, as well as wings, shawarma and fish and chips. Smoothies, milkshakes and desserts like cheesecake are also available.
Two menu items he recommends are the pesto chicken pizza ($21) and the hot pastrami sandwich ($12).
The best way to place an order is by calling in, he says. “We answer the phone all the time.”
