New San Jose hotel gets city blessing, would add hundreds of rooms

SAN JOSE — A new hotel that’s been proposed for a north San Jose site near the popular Topgolf entertainment complex won final city approval on Wednesday.

The hotel would total 214 rooms and be built near the corner of North First Street near Nortech Court in San Jose’s Alviso district, according to city planning documents.

Terra Development Partners, a Milpitas-based real estate firm, is developing the project.

The hotel would be located next to a typically busy Top Golf entertainment and sports complex.

Both the newly approved hotel and the Top Golf facility are part of what Terra Development had originally envisioned as an entertainment hub in the Alviso area.

“The hotel would serve the nearby offices, industrial parks, and entertainment venues,” a city planning document states.

The approval of the hotel comes at a time when the economy in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley is attempting to recuperate from the economic maladies spawned by the coronavirus.

The spread of the deadly bug in 2020 jolted the worldwide travel and hospitality industries and caused travel to dry up on a global scale.

Hotels that cater primarily to business travelers and conventions are still struggling to fully recover from the effects of the coronavirus.

The new five-story hotel in Alviso, if it is constructed and opens, could provide an economic boost to San Jose.

“The hotel would enable the development of a job and revenue-generating use that would support existing businesses and entertainment venues within a growth area,” city planning documents state.
