In 2017, the Association of Independent Festivals brought forth a call to action against the UK government and music industry forces. Dubbed the Safer Spaces At Festivals campaign, the new initiative raised awareness for sexual violence, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse within the music industry. Currently, 103 UK festivals have signed on to this campaign including Parklife, Reading and Leeds, and Boomtown Fair.
The Safer Spaces At Festivals campaign received an update in May with the hopes of festivals showing ethical practices in the workplace. This follows record high numbers of sexual assault from London night club venues and reports of one in five attendees experiencing sexual assault at a festival throughout their life. The Safer Spaces campaign in 2022 sets a reminder to practice consent, provide resources for victims, and preventative action towards sexual assault. Read the updated initiative in full here.
