In the latest edition of my series where actors from Broadway’s hottest shows share what they love about New York, I’m profiling David Abeles. The actor plays Ron Weasley in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which is one of the most in-demand shows on Broadway- or for that matter, globally.
My recent interview with Abeles follows:
Where do you live in NYC?
Queens, baby!
What is your favorite neighborhood in NYC and why?
Hell’s Kitchen because it’s the first neighborhood my wife and I really called home and because it’s filled with fellow artist-types. The walkable commute to Broadway is also a perk.:)
Can you share some of your favorite spots in the Theater District and what makes them so great?
Domus: beautiful and unique gifts from around the world.
Delphinium Home: best place for a cheeky card or NYC novelty souvenir.
Little Pie Company: their sour cream walnut apple pie is incredible.
Glasshouse Tavern: good spot for a post-show martini.
The best place for a pre-or post-theater meal and why. What are the dishes to order?
I love a diner. The Westway is a Broadway tradition and the Times Square Diner on 8th avenue has great fries.
Best Theater District watering hole and the drink to get.
I enjoy an old fashioned at The Rum House.
Insider tips for enjoying a Broadway show. Anything to make the experience better?
Get there early, listen to the orchestra warm up, and enjoy the excited buzz before the show starts.
The New York City theater you love to go to and why.
Radio City Music Hall- it is truly iconic. Even the bathrooms are a piece of Art Deco history.
What other Broadway shows are on your radar right now?
Into the Woods, Leopoldstadt, The Kite Runner, Hadestown, and Mr. Saturday Night.
Share your insider New York gems.
I never know how to answer this question! I’m not sure how “insider” these gems are, but I wouldn’t underestimate a trip on the Staten Island Ferry, a good NY slice and a walk through Central Park on a sunny day.
Can you share your favorite theaters around the world and why?
Shakespeare’s Globe in London was a favorite during drama school at LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art).
Red Rocks in Colorado
La Scala in Milan
