Newcastle are said to be a ‘possible destination’ for Inter Milan centre-half Stefan de Vrij with Eddie Howe keen to find a new partner for Sven Botman. The 22-year-old is seen as the future of the Magpies’ defence despite regularly finding himself behind Dan Burn and Fabian Schar in the club’s pecking order since his arrival at the club this summer and his international compatriot could be an ideal partner.
Botman was one of Newcastle’s marquee signings in the summer transfer window, having arrived from Lille in a £35million deal in July. He is widely considered to be one of the most promising defenders in world football however has found game time somewhat hard to come by as he adjusts to life in the Premier League. However, Howe sees the player as the club’s future and could look to find a fresh partner for the Dutchman.
In De Vrij, he could have found his man. The 30-year-old’s contract at current club Inter Milan runs out this summer and there is a belief in Italy that he will depart the Serie A at the end of the season. He is on the look out for a new club as he looks to continue his career elsewhere following four good years at the San Siro.

It appears his main competition for a place in the XI is the Englishman with Howe reluctant to start with two left-footed centre-backs. As a result, the pair are largely in direct competition for the slot alongside the Swiss international.
It remains to be seen whether or not Newcastle will make a move for De Vrij later in the year as they seek a new long-term partner for Botman at the centre of their defence.
